All Saints Parish Newsletter 15th November 2013
Dear Friends,
Remembrance and Expectation
Remembrance has been much in our minds in these November days.
Expectation and hope are major themes in our worship as we move towards Advent.
For Christians “remembrance” was part of our language and practice long before it was adopted to commemorate the dead of the Great War. Nor is it limited to days in November.
We celebrate the Eucharist day by day to remember Christ as he has commanded.
But this differs significantly from secular remembrance. Ours is not a wistful memory of a tragic death. Nor is it merely a psychological aide-memoire to remind us of the cross.
Our remembrance is an expectant one. We expect that Christ will be present with us in word and sacrament; not as someone long-dead but as risen and alive.
Sacraments are not to be dismissed as “mere symbols.” They are effectual signs – they make real what they signify.
The sacrament we celebrate is also an expectation and anticipation of the future fulfilment of the kingdom in the heavenly banquet.
So, we can say that as we celebrate the Eucharist we “remember the future.” And in that remembrance God works to make our future.
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Alan Moses
