 Second Sunday before Lent

 Dear Friends,

Sunday’s Gospel reminds us of the story of Jesus calming a storm. In this part of the Gospel, we are reminded that he is seen as the lord of the elements. The power possessed by God in the Old Testament is now seen to be present and at work through Jesus in the New Testament. So, the revelation of Jesus continues, and just as people prayed to God for deliverance from the perils of the sea in the past, so now, the disciples turn to Jesus to save them.

We recite much on a Sunday and throughout the week, a well-rehearsed combination of prayers and statements of faith, ancient stories and even commentaries on the Christian life remind us of God’s grace, faithfulness and hope for creation. I am sure that many of us hope to find the power of God alive and active, genuinely influencing our common life together. Our Christian faith is not demonstrated only through a recitation of facts, in which we are caught up day by day, but by a perception and faith in God. This faith reveals our wholehearted acceptance of God’s promise of a better world and seeks to witness to the transforming power of God’s existence and love. This can be evidenced in sentences and repetitive formulae, but in truth, can only be revealed when we put our trust in him for our good, and through us, he is glorified and we are nurtured.

Take the risk today, trust in God and witness to his saving presence.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday or soon.

Fr. John
