At the end of Sunday’s Gospel, after ‘the woman in the city who was a sinner’ anoints the feet of Jesus in the house of Simon the Pharisee, scandalising his host, we read that, as Jesus continued his preaching tour: "The twelve were with him, as well as some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities : Mary called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, and Susanna, and many others who provided for them out of their resources."

We will encounter this group of women again: at the foot of the cross on Good Friday – the apostles having mostly fled – and at the tomb on Easter morning. In the Eastern Churches they are called the "Myrrh-bearers."

As some of you know, our daughter is named after one of them.

Years ago, I stayed at a retreat house in Scotland which was run by the Faithful Companions of Jesus, a community of Roman Catholic sisters who take these women as their inspiration and model.

The ministry of these women in the Gospel is not one restricted to religious sisters or indeed to women. It represents that of many, both men and women, who provide practical and financial support for the mission of Jesus now.

Here at All Saints, we can thank God for the large number of "faithful companions of Jesus" who do this in a great variety of ways. It is no exaggeration to say, we could not do most of what we do without them.
